The video for Judas opens up with a biker gang driving on a highway. From the biker jackets we quickly note that this is supposed to be a depiction of “Jesus and the Twelve Disciples.” Gaga is riding with “Jesus” but soon, Judas shoots ahead of the pack and captures her attention. It is clear from the shot that Gaga is captivated by Judas who gives her a glance as he pulls off. So the video confirms the lyrics and the Gnostic understanding: the choosing of giving one’s love to Judas over Jesus. At the same time the symbols of Jesus as a part of a biker gang distort His true image as God and creator of the universe and makes Him much more like a regular human.
When he comes to me, I am ready
I’ll wash his feet with my hair if he needs
Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain
Even after three times, he betrays me
The opening verses of the song also set the Gnostic tone. The lyrics take moments from the Gospels experienced by Jesus Christ (the washing of His feet which was done to worship Him, being denied three times by the Apostle Peter) and credits them to Judas. This is what Gaga called “turning the negative into the positive”, which is precisely what the Gnostic Gospels try to do by twisting the Biblical account. In the Gnostic Gospel of Judas, the traitorous Judas is portrayed as a hero who was actually given special knowledge from Jesus that no other disciple received. And the supposed “betrayal” was nothing more than a pre-set plan between Jesus and Judas to appear Jesus was going to be killed. The book then goes on to deny the resurrection of Christ. This is a preaching of a different Jesus altogether than the Jesus of the Bible. The Biblical authors were so concerned about this dangerous spiritual heresy that the Bible says if anyone preaches a changed Gospel, or speaks of a different Jesus or different Holy Spirit, “let them be accursed.”
I’m just a Holy fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But I’m still in love with Judas, baby
The Gospel of Judas account also says that Jesus told Judas that the creation of story of Genesis was not true and that Jesus laughed at His disciples as they prayed. It would indeed be foolish to believe in these heresies. The Gnostic Gospels were written 200-300 years after the New Testament and were never considered a part of the Bible.
